Join email lists for updates on joint committee activities

In an effort to improve communications and transparency, I am creating email notification lists for constituents who are interested in the activities of any or all of my three joint committees. I will post advance notices of hearings and track activities of key bills moving through the committee process.

Here are my committee assignments for this legislative session:

Joint Committee on Revenue

Joint Committee on Mental Health and Substance Abuse

Joint Committee on Telecommunications, Utilities and Energy

First term accomplishments

A few days after the end of formal sessions for the Massachusetts 187th General Court is a good time to review the most significant accomplishments of my freshman term. I realize that this is a long list and don't expect everyone to wade through every item and the many links to additional information I've provided, but I hope it gives you some perspective on the many issues that I've dealt with during the past two years. Read more...

Rep. Hunt maintains perfect voting record

State Representative Randy Hunt has maintained his perfect voting record through the end of the legislature's formal sessions.

"My commitment to the 5th Barnstable District residents is to be a visible and open representative, accessible to my constituents, and on the scene in Boston as well as the district," said Rep. Hunt. "The votes of all state representatives are in the public domain and I'm proud to have maintained a perfect voting record during my first term."

Cape & Islands no-discharge area completes years-long quest to protect state waters

Several years ago, as a selectman for the Town of Sandwich, I played a small role in securing a no-discharge area (NDA) for a portion of Cape Cod Bay that includes the Sandwich Marina/East Boat Basin. Yesterday, I took part in a press conference where it was announced that the final pieces to the NDA designation in the state's ocean waters have been put in place. Read more...

MassDOT funds Quaker Meeting House Road sidewalk project

Aesop taught us a thing or two about perseverance in the fableThe Tortoise and the Hare. That lesson was applied to the long awaited project to build a sidewalk on the entire length of Quaker Meeting House Road in the Town of Sandwich and, as was the case in the children's story, the project/tortoise made it across the funding finish line five years after it was pitched by a citizens' group to the board of selectmen. Read more...

Bridge in Sagamore Beach named for fallen Green Beret Pucino

The Massachusetts House of Representatives and Senate enacted Senate Bill 2218 naming a twin-span bridge in Bourne for Staff Sergeant Matthew A. Pucino, who was killed in Afghanistan in November 2009. The bridge is on Route 3 and passes over the Bourne Scenic Highway on the approach to the Sagamore Bridge. It was built as part of the "flyover" project that eliminated the Sagamore Beach rotary. Read more...

Health care payment reform bill includes important accommodations for small businesses

As I am apt to do when the Massachusetts House of Representatives votes on a controversial bill, I like to provide insight into my reasons for my yea or nay vote.

Yesterday, the House passed H.4127, "An Act improving the quality of health care and reducing costs through increased transparency, efficiency and innovation" (that's a mouthful) on a 148 to 7 vote. The seven nay votes were from freshmen Republicans who are opposed to any expansion of government bureaucracy and skeptical of the claims of cost containment by the bill proponents. Read more...
